Online Master of Arts in Communication and Leadership Studies (MA-COML)

The Gonzaga Master of Arts in Communication and Leadership Studies reflects the Jesuit tradition of ars elequentiae and seeks to assist our graduate students in becoming effective, creative, ethically responsible communicators who can understand theoretical choices, and design, express, interpret, and critically evaluate oral, written, nonverbal, and electronically mediated messages. At the same time, this program allows students to increase their knowledge base of the connection between effective communication and effective organizational leadership.

This online graduate program is specially designed for those who wish to advance their careers through leadership within their organizations. Our students come from many professional backgrounds - Finance, Environmental Research, Politics, Education, Media Relations - all with the goal of improving their understanding of the communication skills necessary to create a strong and productive work environment.

Professional Outcomes of the M.A. in Communication and Leadership Studies are:

• Demonstrate a thorough understanding of communication theory and its practical uses
• Exhibit excellence in interpersonal skills, public speaking, small group dynamics, writing and multimedia
• Understand and analyze the influence of communication technologies on American society and its global implications
• Understand the significance of culture in international and intercultural communication and be an effective communicator and leader in multi-cultural environments
• Solve communication problems in modern organizations and social systems from a communication and leadership perspective
• Understand the role of ethics in communication and leadership, and to develop a coherent ethical philosophy for communicating and leading others
• Describe and integrated vision of a leader and utilize this vision in service to others
• Carry out sustained independent research and develop it into a full thesis

The Communication and Leadership Studies Master's degree consists of 36 semester credits. This program is offered online with a one-time, three-day Communication Practicum - covering topics in speech, writing, and multimedia - on Gonzaga University's picturesque campus in Spokane, Washington.
